John, As a psychologist, what do you think in general of the psychological framework of stuttering presented by Charles Van Riper in his book The Treatment of Stuttering?

In particular, what do you think of Van Riper's views about the fragmented self of stuttering expressed in this quote: "We must also recognize that some stutterers resist the the confrontation of their stuttering, not only because of its frustration and stigma, but because it further threatens the basic integration of the self-concept, an integration which is at best precariously unstable. the fluent Dr. Jekyll self does not appreciate being asked to look hard at stuttering Mr. Hyde." — Charles Van Riper, The Treatment of Stuttering, page 226.
