I believe that self-exploration is critical to enhancing self-esteem. In our treatment of stuttering, we can provide many opportunities for such self-study. Interviews, discussion after home assignments, and completion of inventories/questionnaires all provide vehicles for increasing the PWS’s understanding of self. As you explore beliefs and feelings about communication, stuttering, speech, therapy, etc. you learn more about perceptions of self. Possible inventories/questionnaires that you may wish to consider include the Inventory of Communication Attitudes, Andrews and Cutlers S24 Scale, Perceptions of Stuttering Inventory, Crowes Protocols. (See Guitar1998 and Manning, 2001 for some discussion of these tools.) Also, Bloom and Cooperman (1999) Provide a copy of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale that you may wish to check out. Their text is a very helpful resource on this topic.
