Anne and Sandra- Thank you for your question. I do not think that positive self-esteem is the “first step” in therapy. Rather, I see us addressing this issue throughout therapy. SE is very dynamic and changes within and across contexts. There have been interesting studies in this area – including looking at working moms who were beeped throughout the day and asked to complete SE questionnaires and task reports (i.e., what they were doing at that time). The participants reported different levels of SE depending on what they were doing at the time. How does that translate in terms of stuttering treatment? Well, SE is dynamic; treatment targets and procedures should be developed that lead to enhanced self-respect and self-efficacy. In my opinion, long term changes in any area (feelings, behaviors, beliefs) are difficult to achieve without enhanced self-esteem. Jennifer
