Hi Jennifer,

I enjoyed your paper.

High self-esteem is important to everyone, not just persons who stutter. During recent times, I have attended many courses/seminars for self-esteem. assertiveness etc. Despite my stuttering history, I found that I was by far the most balanced individual present. Indeed, no one else (other then myself) was prepared to openly say that they loved themselves irrespective of their blemishes. That aspect is so important.

One guy had such low self-esteem that he lacked the confidence to answer the telephone at work - and he DIDN'T stutter.

I genuinely believe that if we work on other areas of our lives (such as self-esteem, assertiveness etc), our speech will improve as a by-product of our involvement and interaction in these activities. Stuttering is NOT just a speech problem.

Kindest regards

Alan Badmington
