I am a SLP student and I think it's so great that children who stutter have a place to feel that they are not alone. I often hear about events for children who suffer from cancer, who have been burn victims, or even those allergic to the sun and they all share how good it feels to know that they are not alone. Stuttering may not seem to be as devestating by comparison, but the shame that has been shared in so many of the articles that were submitted makes me realize that there needs to be more places like Our Time to let kids open up and accept themselves the way they are. They are learning valuable life lessons that some adults are never able to learn. I think Keith Russel said it best: "I know it's hard to accept your problems, but if you accept them, then other people will too. Just be yourself, and don't change for people." If only everyone were as insightful. I was wondering if Our Time did public shows just for entertainment, or if there is a message included in the performances about stuttering? It seems like a good way to educate the general public about stuttering and to change some common stereotypes.
