Alan, It's funny that you asked me that question (if I show my discomfort) because I've wondered that as well. I was fortunate enough to attend a stuttering group therapy session in which I was paired up with a stutterer and asked him "what reactions from listeners do you find most disturbing/bothersome." He listed some characteristics and went on to tell me that he felt very comfortable talking to me and specifically appreciated the eye contact I kept with him. So hopefully I'll continue to do that!
