Hi Jenny, I think there needs to be a greater awareness about stuttering in schools. We need to 'educate' both teachers and other pupils about the difficulties faced by children who stutter. I once saw a television programme (in the UK) where a speech and language therapist gave a series of presentations at the school of a child with such speech difficulties. This involved group class discussions about the problem. The results appeared most heartening, as other pupils gained an insight into what the child (with the stutter) was experiencing. During the past three years, I have undertaken a programme of talks to community organisations, in an attempt to create greater public awareness about stuttering. The response that I receive is amazing - it is so rewarding. We cannot leave it to the various stuttering organisations to fulfil this role. I feel that it is so important for persons who stutter to also disseminate such information. I realise, of course, that some might be reluctant to follow my example but there is so much more we can do to inform friends, work colleagues and members of our own families. it would be mutually beneficial. Thank you for taking the time to let me know your views. Kindest regards Alan Badmington
