As a graduate student I am already finding it necessary to use Counseling skills with my clients. Without the skills I am learning in my Counseling class I would have a hard time speaking to some of my clients and their families about issues surrounding communication disorders. Using counseling skills to provide information and to also guide and empower parents of children who stutter is a crucial part of this interaction. As it is of course necessary to answer parents quesions pertaining to the etiology and characteristics of stuttering, it would be wrong of us to answer questions about their feelings related to the stuttering. As clinician/counselors we are able to provide information to parents so that they can make their own decisions based on facts and what is the best for their families.
