I am a first year graduate student in speech language pathology. My current clinical placement is with school aged children who stutter. As a gradate student I feel that there isn’t much emphasis placed on us acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary in counseling. Thus I thought the article was excellent and very informative. I have one question though, in the article you mention, that as clinicians we are tempted to give advice to “fix “the problem, my question then is during your counseling session do you provide suggestions/ advise to parents with ways in which they can make changes in their (the parents) communication styles (i.e. slowing down rate of speech, less demanding questions etc.) or do you let parents come up with methods/chnages that they feel will help their child’s speech?
