You have written an excellent article that deals with one of the most important responsibilities we have to perform. Unfortunately, even though we perform counseling on a daily basis in virtually every parent and client interaction, most professionals in our field receive little if any formal counseling training. It makes no sense to me that ASHA does not require a course in counseling. Then again, why should I be surprised? ASHA does not require a graduate course in fluency either. If the university and/or state do not require it, and many do not, our students can earn a graduate degree without ever taking a course in fluency.
