Michelle, There are no easy answers to your questions about counseling. But if we needed to choose one area that we consider very important, it would probably be to "do your own work", i.e. get in touch with who you are as a person, what your values and priorities are, and why you choose to work with people who stutter. It is difficult to be an effective clinician-counselor until you have done this personal work. There are many continuing education programs in counseling. In fact, we have been invited to present an all day workshop in counseling for SLPs in Rochester, New York on the 29th of this month. Certainly you will be able to find a similar kind of program in your area either at a state convention or one offered by a professional development company. And, of course, there is always the ASHA convention which usually offers a number of sessions focusing on counseling. Good luck.
