Gene, Thank you for adding your personal touch to this historic recording. You captured in words both the flavor and the content of this wonderful exchange between two icons of stuttering. As noted this recording was made at one of the early meetings of the National Council of Adult Stutterers in Washington, D.C. This particular meeting was held in conjunction with the Annual ASHA Convention held in Washington that year. I obtained a copy of it the following year (1967) when I started attending their meetings. This early group had a significant impact on my life and on my strong beliefs about the positive value of self-help/mutual aid groups for those affected by stuttering. The NCOAS was the catalyst for the stuttering self-help/mutual aid movement as we know it today. This meeting/ recording is also historic because it demonstrates the congeniality of consumers and professionals in the early years of the self-help movement. Unfortunately, relations between the two communities became strained during many subsequent years. Fortunately, consumer organizations and the professional community have regained a sense of mutual respect. This online conference is a wonderful example of the progress that has been made. Thanks are also in order to Michael Sugarman and Judy Kuster for making this possible.
