Jennifer: In our PFCT-3 (Personalized Fluency Control Theapy - 3rd Edition) treatment program for adolescents and adults and for children (Published by ProEd in 2003), we (my wife, Crystal and I) note: "stuttering results from the interactions of multiple coexisting physiological, psychological, and environmental factors." That being the case, you can conclude that we think that both neuological factors suggested by Van Riper and learning factors such as Sheehan's approach/avoidance learning model are relevant to our speculations concerning the etiology of stuttering. Hope that is responsive to your very good question. Gene
