I am really glad that I read this article! Many of us think of ourselves as “good listeners” but do not realize that our body language and nonverbal cues tell a different story. This article made me realize that I have to actively work on my listening skills. One of the points raised in this article is that in therapy, listening is a way of supporting the client as a communicator—I completely agree. If we are sending our clients the message that we are not listening, a trusting relationship (which is essential for success in therapy) will never be established. I also agree that programs which train speech-language pathology students should incorporate more direct listening skills into their curriculums. Active listening should be implemented not just with clients who stutter but with all clients.
