Melissa, One problem with "active listening strategies" like phrases for seeking clarification, is that they often seem fake when used by inexperienced clinicians. I would practice them with your firiends/family and see if they notice what you are doing. Secondly, your perception of a threatening therapy environment may be just that - your perception. Be honest with your clients and they will be honest with you. If I want more information about a specific topic, I usually say something like " I am interested in what you said about how your family treats your stuttering." If you perceive resistance on the part of the client, be honest and say "I feel that you may be holding back." They may respond and they may not. Either way, you modeled the honesty that you expect/need from them. Also, remember that people can only share what they are ready to share.
