Developing good listening skills is very important when working with individuals with all types of communication disorders because of the frustration these individuals may feel with unsuccessful communication interactions. As a student of speech-language pathology it is important that I really develop these skills. Good listening skills can be practiced with everyone, however, so I feel that making good listening skills a part of my life, it will generalize to the therapy setting. But it does take practice! Are parents of children who stutter usually pretty open to work on good listening skills on their own or is it more effective to incorporate parents into the therapy setting? And about how long would it be expected for them to learn and apply these new skills?
