It is indeed a pleasure to read in the many replies that I have received that I have touched a chord in people, and I want to thank you for your nice comments. I hope that many young people who stutter will come in contact with my letter - as certainly I would have wanted to (and needed to!) read a message of that type when I was in my teenage years. Regarding the choosing of friends, I would reverse Woody Allen's famous line ("I wouldn't join a club that would have me as a member") to an admittedly less humorous but more helpful "I wouldn't want a 'friend' who wouldn't want me as a friend." True friends do not make skills in fluent speech a criterion for friendship.
