Thank you for your paper. Maddie's story really hit home. I have a 22-month-old son who, like Maddie at that age, only communicates with gestures and grunts (for lack of a better term). My husband and I are currently trying to decide whether to seek speech therapy. I stutter, though, so in case my son has inherited my speech impediment, I am hesitant to do anything that could cause him to be conscious about his speech. When discussing the children in your program who began stuttering while being treated for a different speech condition, you mention the proposal that "the attempt to learn the new sounds and motor patterns is often too demanding of the child's capacities at that time." Given this proposal, in your opinion would it be better for a child who has a family history of stuttering to not pursue therapy for delayed speech? I realize this question is somewhat outside the scope of your paper, so if you do not feel comfortable answering it, I'll understand completely. Thank you again for sharing your experience. Kindest regards, Sophie
