Thanks for your question, Jenny. I strongly believe that it is important that stuttering be a comfortable and open subject to reduce the child's potential to feel ashamed of his stuttering. So we do encourage parents to talk openly and supportively with their child. However, a lot of the children are extremely young and show no signs of awareness, so we do not insist that the parents draw attention to their stuttering. A less direct approach with these children is often very successful and the necessity for dealing with the subject dissipates. With both unaware and aware children we also encourage the parents to model some easy stuttering in order to help children feel that their stuttering has no negative emotional connotations.
