Thanks for your question. There is a lot of controversy about the efficacy of indirect versus direct treatment approaches because of the small body of research into indirect approaches in contrast to the large body of research reporting success with the Lidcombe Program. I believe that stuttering is not solely a behaviour and rather results from a complex interaction between the child's capacities and the demands facing them both externally and internally. I therefore do believe that it is necessary to support all the child’s capacities and adjust demands appropriately as well as to deal with their self esteem, and that these principles are compatible with and should be incorporated with direct intervention strategies, when these are indicated (i.e. when the child has not responded sufficiently well to the indirect apporach). So when using direct approaches I like to include cognitive behavioural principles too. Hope this answers your question.
