Hi Stacy, This is a common problem, people are afriad to attend a self-help group or speak openly about their speech. No easy answer but patience is required. Keep trying. If you can find a member of a local chapter to talk to the student one-on-one that could help. Also read up on covert stuttering. Many covert stutterers don't stutter much but are terrified of doing so openly -- or talking about it. It's a syndrome. Your student is not unique. But patience is the key, with lots of encouragement -- and support for when he or she takes the first step. Best, Marty Jezer
