Hi Shawna, Most children have srrong personalities. You are so right; a teacher's role is to help them express the person they are and want to be. With kids who stutter, their stuttering identity can be overwhelming though. There is a temptation to identify themselves by their stuttering, which shuts off other sides of themselves. A good teacher has to find those hidden sides and encourage its expression. Some kids who stutter are naturally shy. They'd be so even if they were fluent. That's OK. But others -- and this is how I was-- are very soical; love speaking. Because I stuttered and was afraid to let it show, I tried to act the strong silent type. It was a good ACT but it wasn't really me. The real me came out later when I discovered it was better to stutter and talk than it was to be fluent by keepiung silent. Cheers, Marty J. <www.smallpondpress.com>
