Donna, one of the most exciting experiences I have as a journalist is usually the reaction of people to the stories we carry in L'Effort camerounais, a bi-monthly publication of the Catholic Church that is in Cameroon. We usually focus attention on issues that the other papers don't consider exciting or sensational enough for their readers. However, whenever I interview Joe Lukong (SCAC Coordinator), or when I write a story about people who stammer, I always receive positive comments from sometimes quite unexpected circles or from very remote parts of our country. Joe once told me that after one of our interviews, he received a call from a local council administrator in a remote part of our country, who had read our interview and wanted SCAC to open a branch in his community. I believe the gentleman in question and some members of his family are stammerers. This man told Joe that he hadn't thought that there was anyone interested in the fate of stammerers anywhere in our country, and that he had been pleasantly delighted to read about the existence of SCAC in our paper. Our paper shuns sensationalism but goes for what we believe matters -- the human person; and it's always a delight to know that we are, in our own modest way, contributing to raising awareness to the fate of marginalized people, be they people with a stammerer, widows, orphans, AIDS victims, etc.
