C.F.O. came to me as a good metaphor: being the boss or manager of my speech areas, thoughts, feelings, goals for fluency, etc. I have noted several papers on metaphor in therapy. After recovering from stuttering myself (as an adult), I know a 5th grader has much to do before middle and high school. The more stable, confident, and resilient the better! Notice the metaphor is about control and continued improvement and NOT just accepting stuttering as static and terminal. These kids must have the idea that if they keep at it, it gets better and better. I believe Les Brown, the motivational speaker, once said: "Shoot for the moon. If you miss, grab some stars." I may have it worded wrong but the idea is to take charge. Which of our kids in therapy will be the next Nicholas Brendan, James Earl Jones, or John Stossel. I like to mentor them to aim high. Cheers, Tim
