I am a Graduate student in Speech-Language Pathology and happen to be currently taking a course in Fluency. The College of Saint Rose follows the Synergistic Approach to Fluency Therapy that was created by Charlene Bloom and Donna Cooperman. This approach integrates these three areas: speech-language, attitudes and feelings, and environment. I personally agree that fluency shaping is very important and that alone, it can be a great therapy approach for some. However for most, I feel that helping the individuals who stutter to identify how they feel about their stuttering and being able to just talk about it can make a world of a difference in the success of therapy. Good listening skills and a foundation of trust must be a part of this in order to be an effective clinician-counselor. I very much enjoyed this article, thank you.
