Hi Lori: Thanks for your interest in our article. As you say, these speech modification techniques are most effective when naturally combined with counseling. By using these techniques to explore behaviors, increase awareness, challenge beliefs, address negative feelings, and help create more positive experiences and communicative ease, we can avoid the trap of treating them like "tricks" to be used to avoid stuttering. It is the clinician's job to ensure that this remains the focus. Doing this can be difficult at times, but I hope you'll keep up your studies and clinical practica and give it a shot! - Darrell
