Hi John, Thank you for sharing your story. I identified with a great deal of what you wrote. School days (particularly from the age of 11 onwards, when I entered a grammar school) were especially difficult. It was so frustrating not being able to participate in the manner I would have wished. Strangely enough, I was never bullied. You see, I was a prominent sportsman and my peers appeared to respect my proficiency in that area. During recent years, I have become so much more open about my stuttering history. I completely desensitised myself by purposely speaking to total strangers (in the street; in restaurants; on trains; at airports - indeed, anywhere). As you know, I also undertake an extensive programme of talks to community organisations in an attempt to create greater public awareness about stuttering. I have laid myself bare in so many situations (including radio, TV and other areas of the media) that I no longer have any hang-ups or embarrassment. Such a course of action was right for me - but it has to be a personal choice. Kindest regards Alan
