Hello Holger, I’m pleased to read that treatment has been helpful. The serotonin-dopamine antagonists (SDAs) appear to be of use as adjunct in stuttering, but as you’re experiencing, one needs close medical monitoring due to the side effects. As for FDA approval for labeling, I doubt that will happen anytime soon. One, the side effects are not benign. Also, the FDA has not approved SDAs for treatment of Tourette’s disorder, which is similar to stuttering in clinical course and in the association of increased dopaminergic activity. The FDA has approved haloperidol for Tourette’s disorder, but this medication is rarely used due to side effects. Thank you for the note. Nathan Lavid, M.D.
