Hello Dr. Schnieder -- we met in Baltimore. Thank you for this article -- I just kept thinking "bingo!" That's exactly how it is, this non-linear world of stuttering. I hope every speech therapist pays attention to your words of wisdom. Sure makes for a bit of a conundrum. I do have a question. You say that symptom severity does not predict future fluency. My son started stuttering when he was about 2 1/2. His grimmaced and sputtered and just had one hell of a time. Wouldn't those sort of manifistations indicate a greater potential for a chronic problem vs. a kid who is simply repeating the first sound of a word? Not that lack of those characteristics would clear the way for fluency....but in retrospect, it seems like it was pretty obvious that this was not going to go away. Any thoughts? Thanks. Dori
