Natalie, The techniques of deep, empathetic listening and skillful interviewing apply to both thodologies. So do techniques of discussion facilitation. For bibliotherapy, identifying a child who can benefit from this strategy then selecting an appropriate book --- my first choices are Ben Has Something to Say, Jason's Secret, and Sometimes I Just Stutter --- and discussing it in therapy with the child and in counseling with the parents represent basic techniques. Narrative speech pathology utilizes the specific techniques I mentioned and can also utilize graphic and sculptural art, essay, poetry, movement, and/or music as appropriate, so knowledge of exprressive therapy selection, procedures, and analyses would be helpful, even essential. And, finally, as in all approaches to treatment, a basic, essential set of tools, such as journaling, meditation, and/or working with a mentor to monitor and skillfully manage personal thoughts and feelings is essential, since both intervention strategies depend on relationship for their implementation. Thank you for your question. Ellen-Marie Silverman
