1)The degree of apprehension is not always linked to severity. For example, a young person with quite a severe stutter may not hesitate to answer questions in the classroom whereas someone with mild stuttering might be quite afraid to speak. Apprehension may be linked to the temperament of the person in question. Dr. Barry Guitar at the University of Vermont has done research on this. Is there an age group that seems to be more conscious of its disorder. 2)The longer a person has been stuttering, the more aware of it they may become. It does not necessarily follow, however, that they would have more trouble seeking help. Sometimes a person with more awareness and severity will make better progress in therapy than someone for whom the stuttering is not as big a concern.
