How lucky our teens and families are now. Even though I was told my dad stuttered until he was a teenager (actually I now realize he still stutters) we never talked about it in my home. My brothers and I talked about many things, but not my speech. I recall when I was 30 or 35 years old my older brother asked me if I thought his teasing made me stutter more as a kid. He asked this with sadness and regret in his voice. For 30 years he carried this GUILT around with him. I'm sure he was only comfortable to ask me about it at that time because I was an SLP working with people who stutter, so stuttering is somewhat of an academic topic with my family. I've had similar conversations with my mom. Parents, siblings, and CWS themselves are so incredibly lucky to have the support organizations that exist now. I feel sad now as I think about my brother Craig, suffering all those years with the fear that because of him, maybe I stuttered so badly. OUCH!
