Food for Thought. Suppose as a child I had a problem with mathematics. If there was no remedial numeracy programme in my school I might be referred to a private specialist who would provide tutoring. Suppose this helped only marginally, my problem with mathematics became non-existent in the presence of the tutor but reappeared under the pressure of examination conditions in the classroom. It began to worry me, and continuued to effect me through life. What could/would I do?. I could/would continue to seek more tutoring or otherwise join an organisation where it was acceptable to be poor at mathematics. Obviously I would have been far better off if a remedial programme for numeracy was provided in my school and managed for me by my teachers. No prizes for guessing I'm trying to draw an analogy with stuttering. Remedial programmes for numeracy (mathematics) and literacy (reading and writing) do exist in most schools . Why not a remedial programme for oracy (speaking)? This would short circuit a lot issues pws have to confront. In short I'm suggesting the best thing SLP's and self help groups can do for children who stutter is to work on increasing the stuttering knowledge of teachers. Mark
