I really loved this article and could not agree more. I live in Alaska and winter sports are quite th thing in our community. I have hd kids describe theri stuttered moment like being a hockey player unexpectedly slammed into the boards and falling down. Another youngster compared stuttering to skiing down a mountainslope coverd with pwder and hitting an unexpected rock. A four year old compared riding in a car on a bumpy rock filled road to riding on a smooth highway. I find the kids find it so much easier to tell me the strategy they are practicing when we use analogies or metaphors. I also have found using other kid's metaphors a wonderful strategy when I am teaching a skill and then soliciting the individual's meatphor.
