The use of metaphor cannot be understated. It is hypnotic as the left brain understands the CONTENT and the right brain APPLIES TO SELF. An example of an isomorphic metaphor is the Ugly Duckling. I asked my parents, age 70+, if they knew the message of the story. They smiled and said of course! I asked when is the last time you actually heard or read the story. They stated: "when you were children." SO, they have not heard it in 60 years, yet they know it verbatim! The Bible and the Torah are rich with metaphors that literally guide people lives. So, how powerful are metaphors? Sheehan's Iceberg metaphor and Ann Smith's Iceberg Metaphor are alive and well in stuttering literature. I love and use Metaphor daily. May I recommend "Metaphoria" by Rubin Battino and "Therapeutic Metaphors" by David Gordon as more references for putting metaphor into therapy. Cheers, Tim Mackesey
