There is some interestring work in the field of education relating to this topic. In order to create a realistic metaphor, one must have a decent understanding of the concept they wish to express. Thus, metaphors are a nice way to test someone's cognitive grasp on a given subject. In my practice, I often have younger children create metaphors simply for the physical nature of their stuttering. As they grow and live with their stuttering, they tend to create metaphors encompassing the multidimensional nature of the disorder. Great paper!
