Hi Allan Interesting to know your story. Thank you for sharing it with everybody. It is a good example how self mastery leads to recovery from stuttering. My story is quite similar to yours: beginning of stuttering, blocking letters etc. I am nearing 60 and in the last few years my speaking improved dramatically both in public speaking and in everyday conversation. I can also perfectly connect to your experience, e.g. that you improved dramatically after your retirement. What I see from your biography and also in the biography on many pws, having recovered from stuttering, I can witness also in my life. What is common that all those pws seemed to master blocking when they mastered their everyday stress. I think that stuttering is linked to old lymbic brain centre, amygdala etc. As long as we have problems in the emotional lymbic brain, e.g. high adrenaline, heart beating and performance fears, we experience stress and block. I had realized this quite a few years ago, but it took me quite a few years to get down my stress level to acceptable levels. I am looking forward to my retiring next year, and hope to be able to do more things that are fun for me. I am postive that my speech will improve even more. But as you say, we have to expand our comfort zone and face the challenges of life and learn that communication is fun. I beleive, that if young pws master their life, and stop to behave like stutterers (see the 13 commandments, why pws block, by John H.) then they will master fluent speaking. I have heard of some stories. However, the stories of such people are not well known in pws self help circles. warm regards, Stefan (from Switzerland)
