It's all about self beliefs, isn't it. Negative: "They don't like me because of my stutter", "I get bad grades because I stutter", "I'm sure they won't listen to me, so I'd better not speak to them", "I won't get the job I want because I cannot speak, so why even bother" and the one I used for so many years: "I'm an embarresment to everyone, so I might as well get off this planet." Instead if using positive beliefs such as: "I might not speak as fluent as others, but I'm good at my job" or "As stuttering is not my fault, why should I be ashamed of it and be silent?" or "I always thought other people have better lives, but if other people think the same, than I'm the one with a better life!" My self beliefs litterally almost killed me. Today I can combine my biggest dream (travelling) with my mission in life (giving stuttering a voice) and because I finally faced my ghosts from the past (going back to school) I am now a teacher myself! A stuttering one! Alan, you are an example of the success of changing self beliefs and to totally turn the iceberg upside down. We stutter and that sucks, but I hope that we, by telling our stories, can challenge other people (and not just those who stutter) to change their self beliefs and stop focusing on what they CANNOT do, and instead concentrate on our skills and goals. It's not just other people setting our limits. WE are our worst enemies, so let's start by switching the red light into green and realize our dreams. Thanks for sharing!
