Hi Rob~ As a future SLP, I just wanted to thank you for sharing your personal story, and for not hiding anymore. It really helps us look inside someone’s life and see that there is so much more involved past our own perception of stuttering. I can not ever imagine the fear and anxiety you have gone through your entire life, I try to understand by imagining it happening to me, but the fact of the matter is I am not walking in a stutterer's shoes. Someday I hope to be working with people who stutter. My question for you is, aside from therapy techniques, (or lack there of) in your sessions, was there anything the speech therapist did for you to help you come out from hiding and not fear speaking, or was that your personal accomplishment you had to uncover on your own? I was curious if you gained any of your strength from your sessions or if they harmed you more than helped you. I think as professionals we not only need to look at what strategies we can teach people to reduce their "disfluencies" but there is a huge psycho-emotional factor as well. Thanks so much for your time and contribution!!!
