Raeanne, Thanks for writing. To answer your questions: 1. What goals were targeted in your speech therapy? It varied over the years. But I think one consistent was getting me to the point where I could communicate. 2. Why do you think that therapy didn't help you? I don't want to convey the impression that therapy didn't help me. That's not true. There were several good aspects of therapy. What I meant in the article was that I never had long-lasting results from therapy. 3. Do you have any advice for me, as a graduate student clinician, to implement in therpy when working with people who stutter? Remember to be compassionate with your clients. Stuttering can be incredibly frustrating, not to mention lonely. I also encourage you to continue participating in forums like this and reading information from the NSA and Stuttering Foundation of America. 4. Also, did you think about hiding your stuttering and the fact that you stuttered every minute of every day? Pretty much. It was a constant struggle and took every bit of energy that I had. 5. When you scanned ahead thinking of what to say did you find that it slowed you down or made you say something that meant something totally different than what you intended to say? It didn't really slow me down (which is why I was able to hide it so well for so long). 6. How do you react when a listener gives you a negative reaction? It really depends on how I'm feeling that day (confidence-wise). I'd be lying if I said it didn't hurt my feelings, but truthfully, it rarely happens. For the most part, people don't care and don't react one way or the other. 7. Lastly, what is the number one piece of advice you would give to a person who is talking to someone who stutters? Don't finish sentences for the PWS. Just let them talk. Thanks so much for writing. I wish you lots of luck! -rb
