Hi Tiffany, Good question. The general goals of the child and family should be take into consideration and compared with your goals. For example, if your goal is improved fluency with a greater emphasis on increased communication skills, and the child's or family's only goal is elimination of stuttering, that's not a good match, and it will need to be resolved. Having said that, I think it is important for the SLP to continue taking the lead in identifying and establishing goals. The child or family don't have enough of a background in speech/language/fluency to set specific objectives and criteria. They can and should be heavily involved in carrying out the goals and providing feedback on the objectives.
