Hi Angie, There are many studies that, taken together, convincingly demonstrate that stuttering in a large fraction of people is due to genetic factors. These include 5 different studies in twins, an adoption study, and half a dozen different studies of how stuttering clusters in families. At the same time it's clear that not all stuttering is due to genetic factors, and there is no doubt that some non-genetic things, like nervousness and talking on the telephone, can make stuttering worse.
