Dear Scott, Yes, what you suggest is certainly possible, although at the moment we don't have much solid evidence to support this view. Most stuttering seems to begin without any particular traumatic event, but it's clear that genetic factors do not exist in every person. If they did, a lot more people would probably stutter. We don't have exact numbers yet, but right now a good guess is that no more than 10 or 20 percent of the population are likely to carry a stuttering gene.
