Hi Rachel, There's no doubt stuttering is caused by genetic and non-genetic factors, as I emphasized in my presentation. A lot of environmental factors may affect the severity of stuttering rather than its presence or absence, but sorting this out in detail will require a better understanding of the specific genetic alterations that contribute to this disorder. So far, it's been impossible to positively identify any single cause of stuttering, either genetic or environmental. At this point, we'd be happy if we could identify just one underlying cause of stuttering.
