Hi Lori, Genetics appears to play a role in stuttering in both males and females. Our research has shown that while there is a great excess of males who stutter compared to females, this is much less apparent in famial (presumably genetic) cases compared to sporadic (presumably non-genetic) cases. Over stuttering is 4:1 males:females, but in stuttering families, the ratio is more like 1.5:1. So, the genetic causes of stuttering appear to be pretty equal in their effect on males and females.
