Dear Laura, We hypothesize that about half of all PWS stutter because they have a stuttering gene. This includes both young children with developmental stuttering and those with persistent stuttering. However, some researchers have suggested that persistence and recovery is controlled by genetic factors. We study only persistent stuttering, so we expect to find genes that influence both stuttering and recovery from stuttering.
