Interesting essay from the late Dr. Hartman--the idea that individuals who stutter have a lower stress threshold for maintaining fluent speech seems accurate in my mind. The psychosocial aspects of the conversation seem magnified in the stutter's mind, even before it takes place, and this anticipation may help lead the person who stutters to "failute" (as he calls it) in fluency when the conversation takes place. To alleviate this tension Hartman would help his clients disclose their stuttering to the significant people in their lives (and others) with the hope that the physical tension of trying to hide would be reduced, and the client would experience less stuttering. Similar to the idea of what voluntary stuttering can accomplish, but I don't know if this would go against Hartman's views or not.
