I appreciate the insights of the late Dr. Hartman. I feel that we all have areas that are weakened when stressed. For some it may be a migraine, for others, ulcers, for others, a back ache. Often we don't know what stressed us, or recognize it at the time. I also believe that self-disclosure can be appropriate, if it feels good to the PWS. If I have laryngitis and have to do a presentation or talk to a group, I announce it, to level the expectations. I can think of many other situations where I disclose why I was late, or forgot something. It just may take the tension away. Sometimes saying nothing makes for a more tense situation. Listeners who know nothing about stuttering may be more tense listeners. YOu know, like we make jokes about things we don't understand. I don't think disclosure is such a bad thing, as long as we are using it to relax the speaker and listener, and not make excuses.
