You [the original poster] say the decrease of dopamine caused by neuroleptics is the main or only mediator of reduced symptoms of stuttering because stuttering coincides with an increase of dopamine levels. I don't agree with that conclusion. Stuttering could be "caused" by an unidentified process in the brain; the dopamine level could correspond to processes that are only reactions to the experience or anticipation of stuttering, such as emotions or distress. Generally speaking, the question of mediation is IMO an open question. Isn't it possible that the subjects in the experimental condition feel that they got the active substance and therefore develop an expectation of relief?
