Ty, thanks for your comments. That diagram was developed as part of our family stuttering program in order to show the parents and children what we were trying to accomplish with speech change. We thought that making the sequence of events visible would aid in understanding the "whys" of treatment. Much to our delight, that diagram has been one of the most useful tools I use. When an individual can objectify what is being taught, the process seems to go much easier and have concrete meaning. I might add a comment to your statement "If understanding this process can reduce stuttering..." Understanding a process cannot reduce stuttering. Only the person who stutters can reduce (or control) stuttering. Understanding the sequence of events can help the individual understand the process but it needs to be made clear to all clients that progress is determined by their hard work and dedication.
